Welcome to the open bio labs. This is a project I am working to make biology more open and democratized. In the present day, it is extremely easy for anyone to get access to internet and learn just about any skill or hobby – be it management or arts or programming. All of these can be learned and mastered given the number of free and open access tutorials, YouTube being the biggest one.

To give you an idea of how easy it is, I was able to take a intro course on computer aided designing (CAD) and start 3d printing in less than a month!!! Before taking this course, I always thought that learning CAD required me to be enrolled in a mechanical engineering program and learn the basics in a class before getting started in 3D printing. Similar thing happened with PCB designing course, I used to build projects when I was a child but never had formal training on circuit designing but after taking the intro course about PCB designing just to feel how it is – I am not only able to make schematics but also decide how and what to use for my PCB traces and board designing including testing.

This led me to discover resources like these in my field – biology which i have formal training and experience in. Biology has been a tricky subject to get hands on experience as it traditionally required high end lab and massive budgets. As I dug more into this idea of “open” biology I was able to find couple of really great YouTube channels that fall under the “open” biology category. The top 3 that I would recommend everyone to check our are – Microbehunter; The Thought Emporium; Diet Toms

This led me create this side project where I share my ideas about how one can get into the “hobby” of biology without having a formal training in it and without having a six figure budget like any post secondary institutes.
